What Is Ikat Fabric? The Ancient Weaving Technique We Love

My fascination with textiles began at quite a young age and has escalated into full blown love. Beautiful prints, patterns and weavings always catch my eye — but investigating the intricacies of how these patterns are made has really become a passion of mine. These age-old crafts have incredible stories behind them, and one of my missions is to make sure they never disappear.

Ikat fabric is one that has completely captivated me. The more I learn about it, the more I fall in love.

A technique that symbolises wealth and prestige

Due to the complexity of the ikat weaving technique, ikat fabric has historically been associated with wealth and prestige. Most prevalent in Central Asia, Indonesia, India and Japan, it appears across many cultures under different names. In Persian, ikat is known as daraee, which translates as wealth — and ikat fabric was often included in a bride’s dowry during wedding ceremonies.

That history is part of what makes wearing ikat feel so special. Every piece carries centuries of craft and culture within it.

The main types of ikat weaving

There are three main types of ikat weaving, each more intricate than the last:

Weft ikat — The crosswise threads (weft) are dyed before weaving, while the lengthwise threads (warp) remain a solid colour. This is the most common form of ikat.

Warp ikat — The lengthwise threads (warp) are resist-dyed before weaving. The pattern emerges as the weft threads are woven through, creating a softer, more fluid design.

Double ikat — Both the warp and weft yarns are tied and dyed before being woven together into a single textile. Double ikat is extraordinarily rare and incredibly labour-intensive — a true collector’s piece. One of my favourite pieces in the boutique is a Sumba vintage ceremonial wall hanging made using vegetable dyes, double ikat weave and the mirror-image technique. It is simply stunning.

Ikat around the world

Ikat is popular across the globe, and many different cultures have their own adaptation of it, each just as intricate as the next. From the patola silks of Gujarat to the geringsing of Bali, from the abr ikats of Uzbekistan to the ceremonial cloths of Sumba — the diversity of ikat fabric traditions is extraordinary.

What unites them all is the commitment to craft, the patience the technique demands, and the beauty of the finished result.

Ikat clothing at La Galeria Elefante

If you’re as captivated by ikat as I am, you’ll love our collection of ikat clothing here at the boutique. I design each piece myself in Ibiza, working with skilled artisan communities who have been practising these techniques for generations.

A favourite of mine — and a customer favourite too — is the Ikat Kirsty Coat. These gorgeous long coats are made from a cotton/silk traditional ikat, with a collar, side pockets and a beautiful hand block cotton print lining. No two are ever the same.

We also stock ikat kaftans, ikat dresses and ikat trousers — each one unique, each one made with love.

Why ikat fabric matters

These techniques are so utterly extraordinary that I truly believe they must never disappear. Every time you buy a piece of ikat clothing, you’re supporting the artisans who keep these traditions alive — the weavers, the dyers, the families who have passed this knowledge down through generations.

That’s what La Galeria Elefante is all about. Beautiful things, made by hand, that tell a story.
